“The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burial be retained; but it does not forbid cremation, unless this is chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teaching.”

Vatican Regulations:

1. It is preferred that cremation be delayed until after the Funeral Mass, but the cremated remains may be present at the Funeral Mass and should still be treated with the same respect as corporal remains.

2. The cremated remains should be treated with respect while handling and transporting them.

3. The cremated remains may be interred or entombed in a columbarium, burial plot in a cemetery, or mausoleum.

4. Options like scattering the ashes from the air, on the ground, floating them on the sea, or keeping the cremation ashes at home are not considered respectful.

Assumption provides a table for cremated remains to be placed for the liturgy. The table is large enough to include a photo of the deceased, a religious item representing the faith of the deceased, and some flowers.

OFFERINGS AND FEES

Customarily, the following offerings and fees are offered:

- $150 donation is often given to the parish.
- $10 donation per altar server (usually there are 3 altar servers).
- $125 fee for the organist.
- $75 fee for the cantor.
- Some families offer the priest a gift.
